I understand, commend you on trying to keep things up, and wish you the best of luck.
I myself am hoping to be able to get a decent older used vehicle, as I currently have none. (Looking at 88 to 96 Toyota small pickups, I can do most of the work on them myself as long as I can get parts, and they have amazing longevity).
Walking now works for me because I live in a small enough city that I can walk and do everything I need, but when I graduate and move I will NEED a vehicle.
Unfortunately, neither my husband or I are good with cars. 🙁 We bought our Kia Soul new so we wouldn’t have to risk any big repairs and it’s worked well for us. I kinda want another Soul. They’re cheaper vehicles overall, new or used and work well for our light usage. 😀 I’m probably going to hit the used car lots once our apartment is leased out and look for another Soul, Rio, or a PT Cruiser. I’ve always wanted a PT Cruiser. 😀 I’ll likely take whatever looks halfway decent and runs well,… or I’ll take advantage of one of the clearance sales. I just want a base model Soul.
I leaned about vehicle maintenance out of a sense of self defense. If I can fix it myself, I can better afford to have a vehicle. I can’t exactly pull, tear down, and rebuild an engine (nor do I currently have the tools to attempt that), but most things like changing water pumps, replacing alternators, general maintenance I can handle so long as I have my trusty Chiltons manual or Haynes guide.
Regardless, best of luck to you and your family.

Please avoid the PT Cruiser; it’s just not built very well.

I’m fortunate, in that my brother is a mechanic, I can ask him for help.
